Hey! This is my very first attempt at blogging. For a number of months now, I have wanted to start a blog that will focus on the things that inspire me. I am a graphic designer and sometimes it’s tough to feel creative and inspired. This blog is as much for me to share thoughts and ideas with myself as it is for you. I hope you are able to draw inspiration through this blog for whatever it is that you do. I will be writing about the struggles and success that I experience through design. I’m going to share about the design process, share thoughts/pictures/experiences that I have found to spark some ounce of creativity, share tutorials on how I’ve accomplished some of my work, and I’m fairly confident that I will share about my family experiences since I am going to be a new dad any day now.
Let’s get started!
For my first post, I wanted to give a little insight into what it is that I do. I’m going to share my most recent work. This project has been a thorn in my side for the past couple of weeks. I am the Media Arts Director at Waterloo Road Baptist Church and we are starting a new sermon series this coming Sunday. The sermon series is based out of John 16. Jesus says “Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” The Counselor is obviously the Holy Spirit. I had several ideas as to what we should title the series such as “The Replacement”, “The Advocate”, “Life through the Spirit” and on and on. I struggled with this one. It’s hard to depict something that can’t be seen.
I usually do sketches to get some ideas flowing before I start working on the computer. This was part of my first thoughts and sketches. It’s the idea that Jesus was ascending and the Holy Spirit was coming down to us. Boom! That’s Gold! However, my worship Pastor, Ron, pointed out that it looks a lot like this…
This is the logo for the book “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan. I guess things get locked in the back of your brain somewhere and I thought I had come up with something that was simple and perfect for this sermon series. Back to square one. Next, I thought about doing a modern take on the typical dove symbol that is commonly associated with the Holy Spirit. I worked on several different options and came up with this…
The three thick lines that come down into the bird’s body form the wings, but it was also my intentions to represent the Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This one was OK and I might use it for something one of these days, but I just couldn’t get comfortable with it for this particular series. Then I went in a totally different direction. After talking to the worship pastor, I went in the direction of a ghostly look. The title was going to be “Coming Alive in the Spirit.”
This was a little too scary and over the top. I think we could have made something like this work if it were closer to Halloween. I just couldn’t feel comfortable with this. Then I stepped back from the project for a bit and started thinking about what the message is that the sermon series is going to focus on. It is going to focus on the Holy Spirit and living life as it is fully intended through the guidance of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit speaks to us, helps us, and encourages us.
The artwork for the series should be something that is simple and conveys that meaning easily. This series is about LIFE through the Spirit. Here is the final artwork that we will use throughout the next 6 weeks.
